My Take on Green Mountain College
You've already read what GMC did for Sherri, my wife. Now give me a listen: SURVIVAL and SERVICE.
Survival: GMC was founded in 1834, as you know and went through several identities. But please consider that GMC survived the Civil War, two World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, the 1917 pandemic, two major floods, the Great Depression, many stock crashes and recessions, only to go under due to incompetent financial management in 2019.
Service: For many adults whose education was interrupted by the storms of life, GMC gave them a second chance and by gum, they got their degree. Further, GMC was inclusive before the word became commonly used: the valedictorian of the last graduating class was a young Hispanic man. Also GMC included many students from war-torn countries in Africa.
This doesn't have to be the end: Albion College came back and so did Champlain College.
And how should GMC come back? GMC was a top flight environmental college: GMC had an excellent biological department, outstanding in limnology. I majored in Chemistry at Columbia and did chemical research for 15 years before music took over my life: Enrique Caruso once said, I don't have a voice, the voice has me. It was something like that. Graduate degrees from the University of Bridgeport and from Connecticut Wesleyan made possible a whole new life me: I've been carillonneur of Middlebury College and Norwich University for 36 years and done concert tours of the U.S. and Europe but what I'm coming around to:
Restart: I couldn't be more delighted if GMC came back as a STEM school. Or as a liberal arts college. Or as a Vermont A&M. Or as a faith-based institution. Robert Frost said, I've miles to go before it's dark. Yogi Berra said, it ain't over 'till it's over. Come on
somebody, pick up the bat and get some wood on the ball!
